Engine Codes?

Engine Codes

Here at North Vic Parts, we supply engine spare parts matched by engine code, not just vehicle make, model, or year. Many vehicles experience engine changeovers, mid-year updates, or are produced with multiple engine options under the same model name. Matching parts by engine code helps eliminate confusion and ensures you receive the correct engine part for your specific engine, reducing incorrect orders, delays, and return issues.

What Is My Engine Code?

Your engine code is the manufacturer’s identification code for the exact engine fitted to your vehicle. It defines the engine’s specific design and components — not just its size or fuel type.

Many vehicles with the same model and year were produced with multiple engine variations, meaning parts can differ even when the vehicle looks identical.

This is why engine spare parts are matched by engine code, not just vehicle make, model, or year.

Confirm Your Engine Code Before Ordering

When ordering engine spare parts, it’s important to confirm your engine code before purchase.
Vehicle year, model, and engine size alone are not always accurate — many vehicles were produced with multiple engine variations.

Ordering based on the wrong engine code can result in incorrect parts and delays.

What Is an Engine Code?

An engine code is the manufacturer’s identifier for a specific engine version.

Example:

  • Toyota 2TR-FE

  • Toyota 1KD-FTV

  • Isuzu 4JJ1

Engines with the same capacity can have different:

  • Internal components

  • Sensors

  • Gaskets

  • Timing setups

This is why engine code matters more than vehicle model alone.

How to Find Your Engine Code

Vehicle Compliance Plate

The engine code is often listed on the compliance or build plate in the engine bay or door jamb.

Look for:

  • “ENGINE”

  • A short alphanumeric code (e.g. 2TR-FE)

    Engine Stamping

Some engines have the code stamped directly on the engine block.

    The engine code is usually:

    • The first digits of the engine number

    • Stamped or engraved on the block

Cleaning the area may be required to read it clearly.

Why Year & Model Alone Isn’t Enough

    Manufacturers often:

    • Change components mid-year

    • Use different engines in the same model

    • Update sensors or gaskets without changing the vehicle name

    Example:

    • A 2015 vehicle may use two different engine codes depending on build date.

Always confirm the engine code before ordering engine parts.
